Hey, guys. Today I want to ask a question. Do you interest in history? For me, I am interested in it but not good at it. Do you still remember that we have learned that Ancient Egyptian Civilization has created paper from papyrus trees to keep all records of the nation’s treasures? Then you may be wondering who invented the very first pen in the world. Thus, I will tell you the history of it.
As I searched on the Internet, the 1st ever people to invent pen as a daily tool to write or record were the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians first created a reed pen to write on parchment and papyrus. It was first to invent at 2000 B.C. It was made from hollow and tubular stems of marsh grasses, especially bamboo plants.
The procedures to make a reed pen involve two steps:
i) Cut the end of the reed into the shape of the nib.
ii) Fill the stem with a fluid and squeeze it.
But since the end of the reed is cut into a big nib, then they only able to write or record down their “documents” with capital letters. This problem has been solved when the Europeans have used the bird’s feathers to produce a quill pen. The European prefer to take the feathers from living swans, turkeys, and geese to produce a quill pen.
There are more steps to make a quill pen if compared to a reed pen. It takes below three steps:
i) Dry the feathers with gentle heat – to remove the oil on it that may interfere with the ink.
ii) Cut the end of the feather into a nib shape and sharpened it with a knife.
iii) Dip the feather into the ink that will fill into the hollow shaft of the feather.
The advantages of this pen are that the pen inks were durable and with the invention of this pen, people can write the word in either capital letters or small letters.
There is still a lot of interesting history of the development of pens. If you want to know more about it, I will drop a link that I found on the Internet below there for you to read. I hope you have fun today.
